How I Use It
After my student watched clips from the movie "San Andreas," I had them utilize the earthquake map to see what they would do to mitigate loss of life in an earthquake. After they were finished, their reports were compared with other students to see what worked and what didn't work. Finally, I had the student get into three-person groups and try the challenge again. We compared the results again and found that all the groups were able to collaboratively reduce loss of life. There was an open discussion about changes made and what worked and didn't work.
My Take
While the graphics are a little old school (or Minecraft style if you prefer), the content and gameplay are advanced. There is a requirement for critical thinking while under a time duress. The impending disaster is coming, regardless of your actions. Students learning that they may not be able to save everyone, is a powerful learning tool for developing their problem-solving skills. I find the game very challenging and I always want to do better.
