How I Use It
I use this game as a supplement to lessons on habitat requirements of different animal groups. Migration is a complex topic and this game provides an avenue to open a meaningful discussion of core needs of and hazards faced by migratory birds. They relate to the idea o hazards, and the concept of atmospheric phenomena (such as the jet stream) in a more involved way than if they had simply read the material. You do need to be sure students are reading the content so what I did was played the game a few times with the whole class. We read the content and discussed it together before they were released to demonstrate how successful they can be at helping their imaginary flock of birds migrate!
My Take
I like game a great deal because it engages kids without sacrificing content for flashy animations. It's keeps the kids engaged (clicking, manipulating birds with arrows) without allowing the game play parts of the game to subsume the content. Again, if the students don't read the blurbs, much of the value will be lost, so you need to find some way to hold them accountable for this.
