How I Use It
I use this in my personal finance class. I have a curriculum that I use that utilizes sims, but I find that there is not enough "meat" in the sims. I found Geni and I use it to supplement the main curriculum. I do not have my students do the missions in order, but I assign them based on the lessons we are working on. Sometimes I have them do the missions individually and some times in teams, depending on the students in my class.
My Take
The missions are challenging. They require critical thinking and problem solving, as students must seek out the information that they need and then apply it to the situation to come up with a solution. The lessons also practice math skills as they calculate take home pay, APR, and other business math calculations. I personally love this program. My students start out hating it because it does require them to think. But at the end, I ask them, did you learn anything doing this that will affect the rest of your life? They all admit that they learned a lot and that the missions taught them valuable skills and information.
