This month's Appy Hour, hosted by Common Sense Education's Program Manager in Pittsburgh, PA, Jennifer Ehalt, features educators explaining how they effectively use apps and sites from our Top-Picks List, Best ELA Apps and Websites Aligned to Common Core

Leslie Crenna, a Common Sense Education Reviewer, covers Storydice, an app for students in grades 2-8 that helps spark ideas for stories, poems, songs and skits. Students roll the virtual dice and see up to ten images that motivate storytelling. The dice are accessible to ELL students and new or struggling readers, with a great Tips section for activity ideas. See Leslie's review of Storydice.

Editor's Note: This video refers to Graphite, the former name of this website.

Lynn Salehi, Middle School Dean of Student Life at Montclair Kimberly Academy in New Jersey, discusses Evernote, the digital notebook tool. Lynn’s school was the first school to adopt Evernote school-wide. In this Appy Hour she shows how Evernote can be used for note taking, content and data curation, and to track student progress on projects, homework completion, and understanding of course material. Teachers can also use the tool to co-plan and share resources.  You can read Lynn’s Field Note on Evernote for more insights.

Amanda Bindel, also a Common Sense Education Reviewer, showcases Shakespeare in Bits: Macbeth iPad Edition. This rich tool includes a teaching plan for Macbeth in an animated interactive that brings the play to life with character explanations,  summaries, analyses, and the full text of the play in written and animated form. You'll love the interactive map of characters and their relationships to each other. You can also read Amanda's Field Note on Shakespeare in Bits: Macbeth iPad Edition for more ideas.

Be sure to RSVP for our next Appy Hour and join the chat on Twitter at #appyhour. Hope to see you there!
