How I Use It
After reading several short stories and learning various story elements, my 7th grade students used Toontastic to create their own stories. They loved it! They got the chance to apply what they had learned about plot elements, character development, and conflict in a fun and creative way.
As I watched them work, I saw them breaking down their stories into parts (setup, conflict, challenge, climax, and resolution) as well as discussing the changes in mood and character. After class, my students begged to be able to use this app again to create stories, and many of them went home and downloaded it onto their own devices.
It was a great way to assess their understanding of plot, conflict, and mood.
My 7th graders were having so much fun that they didn't even know they were learning! Students use this app to create their own animated comics that incorporate plot line, characters, setting, and mood. The app allows for creativity because not only do students create their own stories, they add background music to set the mood, record their own voices, add sound effects, and personalize characters and backgrounds.
The app comes with a set of characters and backgrounds for free, but to add variety and interest, you really need to buy "playsets" that give you new characters and settings.
Toontastic does offer an all-access pass for $19.99 (only $9.99 each when you buy 20+), but unfortunately, that is over budget at my school. If the price was lower, this app would get 5 stars!
