How I Use It
I use it to upload my spelling lists weekly for my class according to their needs. It allows me to load multiple lists each week, which means I can differentiate spelling lists to challenge students who need a little push, and help those who are struggling with words and need additional practice. Once I have loaded the lists, I assign the Spelling City app to my weekly reading centers and students are able to practice their spelling independently in a fun and engaging way. I have heard parents mention to me that their child has asked for the app to use at home. I love that my students are asking to practice their spelling words at home ~ and doing it independently!
I really like using Spelling City as a way for my students to put their spelling words into real practice. I am able to add my own spelling lists, according to my students needs, into Spelling City, and then the students play a variety of games using the words they are practicing for that week. These games include alphabetizing, word scrambles, sentence scrambles, audio testing, and word searches, along with a variety of other things. Unfortunately you have to purchase a premium membership to allow you access to more games that would give students practice with parts of speech, vocabulary, and writing, but for what you get for free, it has definitely been worth using. Students are able to use this app or website independently, both in the classroom during centers and at home, where they can access my spelling lists any time they want to practice and review. It has become a great tool in their tool box.
