How I Use It
I use it as a review game for spelling words. I have used it with both 3rd and 1st grade level students. 3rd graders were much more independent with it. Beginning of the year 1st graders ran into more technical glitches due to their unfamiliarity with computers. Occasionally we also use it as part of our typing intro in computers as students have to enter in their spelling words. Students type in the words and spend about 30 minutes playing the various games the site has available. Hangman is a particular favorite of some of mine, but other enjoy the unscrambling the words or doing a word search. The only frustration is again, that they can navigate "back" too far and lose their list. A way around this is to get a paid subscription, but I prefer to use the free service.
My Take
I love that students have multiple ways to practice their words all available on one site. Student choice is a huge motivating factor for many. Studying spelling words can be a dry experience, but this site makes it fun and exciting again! The free vs. paid parts can get tricky and students weren't happy to see they couldn't play some games. Occasionally students would navigate back to far and lose their list causing them to have to renter the words. Overall though, we really enjoy our weekly trip to the computer lab to practice our spelling words for the week.
