How I Use It
Spelling City is a great free resource for both teachers and parents. However, we chose to upgrade to the next level and purchased subscriptions for our students. That keeps a record of how they are doing and includes additional games that make learning writing, spelling, and vocabulary words more fun. I used to complain about the hours of valuable teaching and learning time we lost each week to administering, checking, and recording multiple levels of pre- and post- spelling and vocabulary tests. We can now spend those extra hours on more engaging and productive activities.
I upload the students lists for the week, change any sentences or definitions I want, and mark which activities I want the kids to do and in what order. I can easily differentiate lists based on students’ abilities. Students get immediate feedback on tests, and I have a permanent record of how they’re doing. Students also have a running record of words they miss each week, can practice those words in a variety of ways both at school and at home with an internet connection, and I can use those frequently missed words for future lists. At $1.95 a student, the cost is minimal compared to the extra hours of classroom time we gained.
Spelling City offers activities to learn spelling and vocabulary words. Spelling and vocabulary lists can be uploaded, and there are many lists available sorted by grade level. There are many free activities that help students learn spelling and vocabulary words, as well as a selection of activities available on a subscription basis. The variety of activities is good and appropriate for multiple age groups.I have used their website for many years, and recently began having students use the iPad app. Spelling City continually upgrades it's services and has a great customer service department.
