How I Use It
The Speech Journal app is wonderful for students to connect images with their own recorded voice. The app can be used by the teacher to create audio step by step directions with supporting images. However, the ability for students to hear their voice and decide to re-record or select different images based on text is where the real power comes in. Images can be taken with the device camera or imported from the Photo Library. Students enjoy revisiting previous recordings under their student profile and they can email the file to the teacher or parents for listening with QuickTime. The app is great for use during centers where students practice sequencing, order words and step by step directions. The app could be used as a portfolio with reading samples over time or artifacts of learning topics.
My Take
Speech Journal can be used with many ages and types of students, even though it may seem focused on students receiving speech services. With creative thinking, the primary and intermediate teacher could find many uses. A consideration when using Speech Journal on a shared device is that each student can access the journal of other students. Currently, the images and audio file do not merge together into a video file when sent. The two media files are separate from one another.
