How I Use It
I used it to discuss epidemiology with my middle school students. At first, I played an offline kinesthetic game, which simulated the spread of a virus. We then had a brief discussion about viruses, vaccines, and disease control. I also discussed the field of epidemiology and highlighted salary and education required for the field. I used the app for students to use what they had learned in the previous game and discussion. At the end, I followed up the lesson with an exit slip using the Socrative app. What worked about the app is that students were very engaged. At the end of the lesson they asked to solve more cases, which is a great sign. What didn't work was that some students were rushing through the case; not accurately reading prompts, questions, and data. I needed to move throughout the classroom to monitor students' speed and to help them when I noticed they were getting a lot of questions incorrect, which is not a unique problem when working with students in 1:1 environments.
My Take
This project is a great teaching tool for preparing students to draw conclusions from non-fiction science texts. The app asks students to look at data and answer questions, which will prepare students for standardized exams; however, the great thing about the app is it's engaging, so students are almost "tricked" into standardized test prep. Some of the text was too advanced for middle school students. Also the badge system is difficult to navigate. Students would receive badges, but it wasn't clear what they accomplished to attain a new badge.
