How I Use It
My usage has evolved from using Showbie to collect a few pieces of digitally created work to now having the children in my grade 6 class submit practically every piece of work they do through Showbie. Be it digitally created work with Apps such as 'Book Creator', 'Explain Everything' or 'Pages' or hand-made work, which is then photographed or filmed and them submitted, through to screen grabs of Apps that I have asked them to use; the assignment is set and the work is submitted to me through the App. It is worth mentioning that I work in a school with a 1:1 ratio of iPads to students; each child has the Showbie App installed on their own iPad, (they don't have to log in/change accounts, it has a built in camera for recording hand-made work etc) so bear that in mind when thinking about how this could be implemented in your own setting. Before the due date, I can check on who has and hasn't submitted the work and give reminders to those who need them, either through Showbie as a voice message or written note, or face to face in the classroom. Parents also know where to look to see if their child has any outstanding work that needs to be completed and can assist/encourage as appropriate. As the due date passes, I can immediately see who has and hasn't met the deadline (work can still be submitted after this point) and can give feedback, again either as a voice message or written note within Showbie, or as I prefer to, export the work to the native App in which the work was created or an annotation App such as 'Explain Everything' or 'Skitch' for to attach verbal and written feedback. The marked piece of work can then be resubmitted to the student to reflect upon the feedback that they have been given. This all happens seamlessly. One improvement that I would like to see would be the ability to see on one page a grid with all of the assignments down one side and the students across the top to have an overview by assignment and by student of what has been submitted and assessed and what hasn't. Aside from this, Showbie has become an important part of my workflow and I couldn't be without it now.
My Take
Showbie has helped enormously in how I assign, assesses, collect and have students reflect on their work.
