Teacher Review for Shadow Puppet Edu

Super simple, intuitive, kid- friendly video creation app! My students are highly motivated to be active creators of content while using this app to show what they know!

How I Use It
My students use this app to create videos to show their learning or highlight their work. They can take photos of big writing projects that they have completed individually or in teams, then add them to their puppet, record themselves reading their work out loud to turn it into a YouTube video. They love being "YouTubers!" They've also used this app with math to "teach" next year's students how to do different types of math problems. At the end of an addition and subtraction unit, students worked together in teams to write challenging real-world story problems, then they created physical models to represent the problem, took pictures of their story problem slides and their physical models of the problems with the iPad. They added all of the pictures to the puppet and then used the special features like the drawing tools and sound effects to count the manipulatives in the physical models one by one and talk through various solution strategies for their story problems. I also use it myself at the end of units of study to put together a combination of photos and videos highlighting the learning that has taken place over the course of the unit so that we can look back at it and keep the experiences fresh in our minds throughout the year. My first graders are able to complete these alone after one or two guided experiences. The only thing that I don't like is that there are a few minor glitches with the music, sometimes it will cut off and sometimes the picture on the screen won't advance.
My Take
This is a wonderful teaching tool to move our students from passive consumers of content to creators. It is perfect for even the youngest learners to share their work, their ideas, their learning with a broader audience. I like how easy it is to use, the prompts are simple and straight forward. All you have to do is click the photos you want, organize them in the order that you want, click record, add any graphics, click next, keep going until you're done. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out, but the final product is high quality!
