How I Use It
Studying for the SAT's is very difficult for some students especially on their own. The SAT Slam App is great for individual and on-the-go learning. After you download the app, there is a "word of the day" notification that is displayed on your phone that is terrific and students found really helpful with daily learning. Students also liked the "Teach Me" part of the app that provides the options; All Words, Difficult Words, and a Playlist. The playlist is great because it allows students to create a list of words that were difficult to learn or remember. The favorite part of the app for students was the "Remember This" for each word. These lines were funny and related back to the poem that described the word. Students also liked the change in audio voices for each word because it made learning each new word entertaining and keep them interested.
My Take
Compared to free SAT vocabulary Apps, Word Slam is worth the $3.99. It is easy to use, entertaining, and has good functionality. The humor is geared for high school students and helps students have a laugh or two while they are learning. The downside with this app is the length of the poems. Although the rhyming poems are catchy, for some words the poems are too long. Also, although 400 words are provided as part of the app, there is an additional cost to add new words (200 words for $1.99). Bottom Line: This is a good individual app that makes learning new words fun. It can be used to study for the SAT or anytime to improve vocabulary.
