How I Use It
Pic Collage is a wonderful app that allows students to create custom posters and collages. In a first grade class, students created visual representations of number sentences, took pictures of their visuals, and uploaded them to Pic Collage where they used the text feature to type out the number sentences represented in their pictures. In doing so, students were given the choice of manipulatives in the classroom which to use for their numbers (think counters, magnets, pencils, cards, computer mice!) and then showed their math knowledge and skills visually by adding photos and text to their posters. This made for such a great, quick, creative formative assessment in place of a worksheet. Students can easily save creations to the camera roll and then either print the collages or app smash them with other apps like Chatterpix or Seesaw to share with others or add audio instructions or explanations on top. In a fifth grade class, students worked on perfecting their dramatic skills to represent assigned vocabulary of emotion words (frightened, ecstatic, sorrowful, disappointed, etc). They took photos of their partners acting out these emotions, and then added those photos to Pic Collage. Next, they labeled the pictures of the words they were representing to create visual posters. These collages were smashed with Seesaw where classmates created digital stories that incorporated the emotions displayed in the collages. In this way, students were able to better understand the meanings and nuances of specific vocabulary and generate written products to accompany these collages. It was such a successful project and the students were so proud of their work! Using Pic Collage as a tool really made the learning meaningful for the students.
My Take
Pic Collage is a versatile and simple to use, yet very effective digital tool. Children as young as kindergarten-aged can quickly learn to navigate Pic Collage and create wonderful products to demonstrate their learning. Students that I have worked with really like the opportunity to personalize their products to represent their own personal creativity. Allowing students’ choice in their final products increases buy in and productivity as students create to ‘show what they know’. Pic Collages can very easily be saved to the camera roll, uploaded to Dropbox, printed, or app smashed with other applications, which makes sharing the students’ work a breeze. While Pic Collage is a digital poster app, the addition of an audio component, where the student could instruct or explain would be great. Although this is not included with the Pic Collage app, it is easy to load the Pic Collages into other apps that do feature audio as an option and add the audio layer to students’ products (Chatterpix and Seesaw are two with which we have been successful). I highly recommend Pic Collage to give students’ creativity and choice in demonstrating their learning!
