How I Use It
When introducing the periodic table, I use this app to explain the data the table provides, show extra information about specific apps, and have students build models. We revisit this tool in class and have students use it as a resource fro assignments, labs, and projects. We projected NOVA elements on an interactive white board, recorded a lesson, and had students annotate their observations and ideas. This activity improved student engagement and interest in Chemistry.
My Take
The NOVA Elements app is much more than a simple periodic table. Besides showing the basic data, there are pictures, videos, and examples that allow students to 'see' the element in action. The entire Hunting the Elements video series is also included in the app. The most innovative aspect of this app is the build function, which allows learners to build animated models of each element. The only criticism would be that it takes up quite a bit of space which is often limited on mobile devices.
