How I Use It
Nearpod has so much potential. Just like any application, it's only as good as the teacher. I've used Nearpod to deploy already-created lessons with students and personally created lessons with teachers for training purposes. Using the already-created lessons, the teacher that I was working with I were able to lead students through a lesson on quotations that included slides to analyze, a video to watch, opportunities for students to submit their work as guided practice and a quiz to assess their understanding all in real-time. As the teacher, we were able to immediately see where the students were having difficulty and correct their work at the point of the mistake. It's formative assessment at its best. As a teacher trainer, I used Nearpod as part of an iPad course to show how iPads could be used. Within that Nearpod presentation, I included one of each type of slide you could include to demonstrate how it could be used with students. Regardless of who is on the receiving end of a Nearpod presentation, there is immediate engagement and excitement which equals more time on task and ultimately more learning!
My Take
I really love the fact that Neapod allows you to import already-created PowerPoints so you don't have to create from scratch. This is a definite time-saver. Being able to add a variety of interactions within a normal PowerPoint is a huge plus when it comes to gauging the learning that is going on in the classroom. Oftentimes when a teacher lectures from a PowerPoint, there are no "checks" throughout that presentation to determine if the students get it. With Nearpod, you can do that. Another pro to using Nearpod is the fact that you can monitor which students are checked in and which have checked out. This is a major plus in the classroom management piece of technology integration. With Nearpod, you don't have to worry about it only being available on certain mobile devices. It does work across mobile platforms while also working on regular computers as long as you have internet access. This is plus for any school working with BYOD. I highly recommend this application as it's one of my top 10 applications I recommend to teachers.
