How I Use It
This is a visually captivating and intellectually stimulating app for all ages, starting in kindergarten. The beauty of it is its power of differentiation. If you zoom in, the numbers get more refined (tenths, hundredths, thousandths). There is an infinity of numbers between 0 and 1. Kids see that for themselves. If kids do not zoom in or out, you have standard number line for practice. For some kids, I had to get them back to whole numbers; other kids excelled at the higher numbers. Teachers should have a conferring notebook with them and circulate while students are using this app. It reveals what children understand about number sense and can be used as a diagnostic tool.
My Take
I think it is a perfect tool for younger students. Older students who are not understanding place value would also benefit from the visual nature of this number line game. Whole numbers are frogs, numbers in the thousands are dinosaurs, and in the thousandths are amoebas. Visualizing the abstract helps kids learn. Great app for reviewing number sense which is a pillar of math fluency.
