How I Use It
I have used this on 'iPad Days' with my kindergarten and first graders. We began as a whole class lesson, and then once students were familiar with it they began to use it independently. The interface was very easy for even my youngest students to use, and it provided great support for learning basic math facts. We began the lesson as a whole-class activity as we talked about identifying numbers. After completing a round as a class with the teacher demonstrating on the iPad, students then had independent practice time. Students who mastered the easy level were then allowed to adjust the difficulty level upwards and continue to the next level. Students who struggled were easy to spot, and their difficulty level was adjusted downward until they achieved mastery, then slowly raised. Several of my classes have inclusion students, and they were extremely excited to be able to use the same app as the other students, just at a different level.
My Take
Motion Math: Hungry Fish is a fantastic math app for younger students. The game-based instruction and practice engaged my students, and they often choose this app when given free time. The ability to adjust levels and operations makes it easy to differentiate for students at different levels. Students are able to complete activities starting as simple as number identification and as complex as negative numbers. I really liked the ability to set a difficulty level for each type of operation. It is great for positive reinforcement with struggling students, and a fun reward for those who are more confident in their abilities.
