How I Use It
Mobento is a free online educational video service. It can be accessed through the website, or as a free mobile app. Mobento has potential to be a great resource in the classroom, or at home. I would suggest using Mobento as a reference or resource to support teaching specific content, such as in the areas of science, math or art (Mobento has a wide-variety of content, but it seems that these areas are the most robust). Students can access specific videos (by category, organization, or search) and view the content individually or in a small group. Although the Mobento website could be used in a large group setting, the mobile app is best used by an individual. (If using an iPhone / iPad the app does have a great feature that allows the user to send the video stream to an AppleTV.) I would suggest pairing the video with a graphic organizer or question sheet as an assessment, especially for longer videos! Unfortunately the videos are what you see is what you get -- currently there is no feature that allows the videos to be close-captioned or presented in alternative languages.
My Take
Overall Mobento is a useful resource. Although there are not extension activities built into the app, the quality and quantity of diverse video resources provided by Mobento will allow teachers to use the video content as a "jumping off point." The app allows students to access educational content on any wi-fi or mobile internet connected device -- videos can be streamed, or downloaded for future use. The best part of the app is that students don't need to create a log-in to access content. However, it is advisable that they do, as this will give them access to their own history of viewed / downloaded content and access to "organization videos" -- specific files of videos, like "Vids for Mr. X's Science Class," or "NASA." Although this is not a resource I would use everyday, I would definitely recommend Mobento for the occasional small group assignment, or individual learning activity.
