How I Use It
I use Lightsail everyday for independent reading with my 3rd and 4th grade students. I begin the period by teaching a mini-lesson focused either on the common core reading skill that I want the students to practice that day or a strategy for assessments. When they students log on the first thing that they do is reply to my comments. They absolutely love that they are able to write what they are “thinking” about their book and receive feedback from me. It feels as if they each have their own private conversation with their teacher and it gives my shy students a chance to flourish. Engagement in reading has skyrocketed in my class and students are much more focused and on task. Students are able to track their growth by looking at their progress page. They continue to strive for excellence and reach their reading goals in the program.
The Lightsail digital reading program has made my teaching much more effective while providing me with real-time data on my students. All of the assignments and information that I need are stored within the program and as a result, I rarely need to use copy paper! Lightsail gives me the chance to actually see what my students are thinking as they read. There are no more stacks of notebooks to look through or Post Its all over my classroom floor. The student motivation has greatly improved and there is definitely a healthy competition within my classes for who can read the most books, who can increase their reading level the most, etc. Having access to so many books on so many topics has been amazing! A digital library eliminates the problem of having to replace books that have been destroyed or taken. I am able to constantly pull small groups and confer with students about their progress by just tapping through a few screens on my iPad. Since we began the program, the progress that my students have made is astounding. Lightsail has truly revolutionized the way that I teach literacy in my classroom.
