How I Use It
I use this app to teach basic coding concepts. After teaching my students what computer science is and what it means to program I use Kodable to illustrate the processes that programmers use. They learn the importance of carefully sequencing their commands. Kodable allows them to practice this skill with increasingly more challenging puzzles. We talk about looking at the entire puzzle to find instances where a series of commands repeats and this allows me to introduce the concept of loops and writing code that is efficient. Finally, we discuss conditional statements and how to use those to give you more control over your program.
I have evaluated many different programs and apps to use them to teach programming and Kodable is by far my favorite. The instructions built in to the program are excellent and allow me to give students the freedom to work at their own pace, stopping them only when I want to introduce a new concept. The teacher guide is very helpful to me as I plan my lessons. I used this program with 3rd grade and though the app is recommended for 6 to 8 year olds I think if you want them to make the programming connections and understand the concepts I would suggest using it with 8 and 9 year olds. Younger kids could solve the puzzles, but may not understand how it relates to programming.
