How I Use It
I used this app with my 5 year old son. He is a beginning reader, so I thought it would be a great app for him. He knows all of the letters and their sounds, and he's at the point where he's learning to put the sounds together to form words. This app should be perfect for his stage of literacy, but it's not. He quickly got bored with the six different activities in the app. There are opportunities for him to sound out and create words in order to pass through levels, but none of the games kept his interest. He found the primary character, Tommy the Turtle, a little too slow and boring (quite fitting).
My Take
Learn to Read still has some value as an app, but I would not rely on it to be the primary tool to support and help kids practice their literacy development. Other sites and apps like Starfall are more engaging and provide more options.
