How I Use It
I downloaded 'Just Get 10' for my iPad to try out with some students. First I played it. While it was a challenging game - it is pretty difficult to just get 10! - I did not need to utilize any math content or skills to play. I also had a few third graders try it out, to get their take. They thought it was fun, even though they couldn't get to 10. They also liked that the tiles were color coded, so the visual appeal of the game board was nice. However, they didn't stay with it too long and later said that it didn't help them learn anything. It could certainly be a nice challenge for students in a center, or early finishers to use sometimes, but I would not use this app in everyday rotation as content was lacking and there are numerous other apps out there that are more content and skill driven.
My Take
While 'Just Get 10' is a fun number puzzle game, unfortunately it is not an app that I would recommend as a teaching tool. It engages critical thinking and problem-solving in a game format, but it lacks in keeping students engaged for long periods of time as there are no variations in the game. Additionally, no math skills are learned or enforced, it simply is a puzzle that happens to have numbers associated with it.
