The free version of JogNog provided a varied assortment of quizzes for grades 2- high school. The quizes offer students a chance to test their subject knowledge and are motivated as they acquire coins.

How I Use It
JogNog provides a quick way to access quizzes that can be used to help students review content knowledge in Math, English, Science, History and Enrichment. It can be used as a way for students to review core concepts in a specific subject area. If a student is struggling with a concept they can access a quiz from a grade below and if they want to be challenged they can try a quiz from a grade above them. Students were motivated by collecting coins and liked the challenge of being able to continue to collect coins from quizzes in different content areas. I found that this product could be used in a couple of ways. One way is obviously to use it to review content from an area as well as an assessment tool. Another way that I found it useful was to begin a lesson with the quiz as a way to activate prior knowledge and to alert students to identifying core concepts in the upcoming lesson. Another excellent use for this product is creating quizzes that are aligned to your lesson and assign those to students as homework. This way students are focusing exactly on the concepts that they need to be reviewing. Students seemed to enjoy challenging themselves by completing the questions as quickly as they could. They were competing against themselves and this seemed to encourage them to keep answering questions. There was lot of focus on acquiring coins, towers, etc and at times some students became more focused on the game aspect than the learning aspect. After completing the free quiz, some students wanted more in that particular area and quickly recognized that there is a difference between the free and paid version.
My Take
Overall I liked JogNog as a teaching tool. It provided ready made quizzes in every content area. There were lots of quizzes for students to be used as assessments, review and homework. It is also aligned with the common core and you can align the quizzes with your curriculum. At times the earning of coins element got in the way as some students focused more on the coins and less on carefully reading questions and using test-taking strategies rather than guessing, just so they could accrue coins. I liked the free factor, but if a student wanted to go deeper into an area they were blocked unless the class has the paid version. It supported my teaching, I don't think it made it better, but it is a great supplement to lesson planning that is easy to set up and for the class and can be used immediately.
