How I Use It
I used iTooch Music with our lower school students and they absolutely feel in love with it. I worked with our music teacher so that she could use it to both supplement and augment her curriculum. What was helpful is that there is such a wide variety of topics from concert behavior, to brass instruments (woodwinds, percussion, string, etc..) to culture to history and more. The kids really seemed to enjoy learning and it was great fun to see them interact with each other, share badges and dole out new facts to us as teachers and to others. I have to say that there is nothing that didn't work. It was okay if they self-selected material, we didn't need to be connected to wi-fi to continue to use the app and when I reported one glitch I received immediate feedback from the developer.
I think this is a great teaching tool. Teaching music history can be tough with younger students as their attention and engagement quickly fades. iTooch gave a new prescriptive on topics and was a fun and different way to supplement the classroom material. While I definitely feel that technology should NOT replace hands-on experience and real life conversations this was a great way to break free from the traditional music classroom and enjoy a little technology and allowed for differentiation.
