How I Use It
I have used the Go app in my Kindergarten classroom in a variety of ways. The Go app is the easiest, most user friendly app four that work with the Dash and Dot robots. We have used it for many things from basic letter practice (“Make Dash go to the letter that makes the first sound in man”) to higher problem solving skills (“How can we get Dash from one side of the room to the other when there are obstacles in the way?”). The students have had no problem figuring out how to make the robots move, use the sound effects, or the new voice recording part (new with the latest update). The students also have fun changing the light colors on each of the robots. Although the Go app is geared more for the Dash robot, the students do have fun trying to find new ways to incorporate Dot as well. The students come away learning about robotics and sharpening their problem-solving skills without even knowing they are doing it.
My Take
I have loved the excitement that Dash and Dot have brought to my classroom! The Go app is the simplest of the apps that accompany the robots and I have found it a great asset in teaching them the basics of how Dash and Dot work. The only criticism that I have regarding the Go app and the robots in general is the lack of initial setup directions. There are no written directions for setup and finding them online was no help either—it was more of a trial and error thing; however, it is very user friendly if you have even a little tech savvy.
