How I Use It
I plan to use Field Trip to help provide historical relevance to the area in which my students come from. Not only will I ask that they select areas within a close proximity from their location at school, I plan to assign them the task of visiting these areas in person. Once they complete the visit, the students need to create a Venn Diagram in Google Draw that illustrates the difference between the location in the past, to that of what it has become. Is it used for the same purpose? Does it look the same? Would you be able to recognize the site without the assistance of a map and GPS? These Venn Diagrams should be very successful in providing the students a glimpse at the changing landscape in their own neighborhoods.
My Take
Field Trip does a nice job of providing both historical information about the students' surrounding area, as well as giving the opportunity to explore culture around the world. Many of my students have spent their entire lives in the same community, but have very limited knowledge of its history. Field Trip helps to provide an easy to navigate look at images and text that explains how an area evolved over time into what it is today. It provides maps and distances from the real time location of the students, using the GPS function on their phones, which can help to guide them on a walking tour of the sites listed. If students are feeling more adventurous, they can use the "Select Your Interests" section to take a closer look at different cultural aspects around the world. A nice addition that could be added to the app would be giving the students the ability to search for specific areas or easily navigate out of their local environment.
