How I Use It
"Explain Everything" is a very useful app for both teachers and students. I like the ability to create presentations, file them, and have ready access to them in any classroom in my school. My students love using it too. It is a quick way to show student thinking such as how to solve a math problem, demonstrate an idea /diagram/ illustration from a piece of literature, or a student project in process. When I started to use "Explain Everything", I noticed how much better it was to use the app from the back of the classroom, instead of being "tied" up front to my interactive board. I can walk among the students, checking on understanding as I have the app open on my iPad, and in view on my interactive board in the front of the classroom. Student questions or confusions can be addressed as they occur, rather than waiting a day or two to discover the error. The down side of this app is that I don't have enough digital devices for students or groups to use and project on my board. Next year this problem will be solved with a classroom set of iPads, but for now we share one iPad and a few student iPhones. I find that students are engaged because they love learning how to create and share digital presentations of their thinking and learning. Content from other sites can easily be imported to this app. To encourage teachers to become more comfortable with technology in the classroom, we all created our own presentations in "Explain Everything" for each other to view! First, we imported a Telagami ( a digital representation of a teacher) to introduce a lesson, uploaded a video clip of that lesson and then each teacher recorded an audio file of a student presenting a piece of work. It was an amazing learning experience for all, and the students really enjoyed being a part of a teacher-learning experience! "Explain Everything" is one app I use on a regular basis in my classroom.
My Take
Not only is "Explain Everything" a great teaching tool, it is useful for student presentations, to demonstrate the thinking process, and for quick "show me" clips when working with small groups. "Explain Everything" is fun for teachers and students, easy to use, and presentations can be shown from a variety of resources. I use this app every day in my classroom.
