How I Use It
eSpark inputs my students NWEA-MAP data into the system and then creates individualized app programs for each child. My students independently used this program 3-5 days a week while I met with small groups. Students were fully engaged for the entire 20-30 minutes as they watched instructional videos and used coordinating apps for practice. My students also reflected on their learning by writing in an eSpark log 1-2 times a week. They wrote about the skill they learned, how they utilized it while practicing, and explained their level of understanding of the skill. Many students applied knowledge gained from eSpark practice to classroom lessons and discussions. Students are quizzed after each unit and I was able to monitor their progress on the teacher dashboard. The dashboard can seem overwhelming due to daily time constraints, but when I made time to view it, I learned a lot about my students' areas of weakness and success. The dashboard helped me create quick mini lessons to assist struggling students before they moved onto the next unit. This personalized learning helped my students become more independent in many areas.
I've used eSpark for 3 years in my classroom and I love it! It allows ALL of my students to get the attention and practice they need with their own individual areas of weakness or strength based on NWEA scores. Even though students are exposed to the CCSS they need to be successful in 4th grade, I've also had students working on 2nd grade through 6th grade skills in one room, at the same time. Students work at their own pace and aren't ashamed of their current learning levels because it's private. They remain engaged because they are successful at their own levels. I would never be able to accomplish this alone. eSpark allows me to reach multiple levels of learning at one time. My students' test scores, classroom discussions, and higher-order thinking have been positively influenced by eSpark. As a company, they are extremely helpful and open to suggestions and improvements and always value teachers' opinions and insights. This program was definitely created and continues to improve with teachers and students in mind.
