How I Use It
I use this app two different ways. I often have students say, "Would you explain that again using the same words?" With Educreations I can write and speak on a whiteboard and produce a small part of a lesson. I teach chemistry so I use Educreations to solve simple chemistry calculations or draw molecules or show how to balance an equation. It is sort of my own Khan Academy. In some ways it is better because my students get to have a lesson taught by me, their teacher, not someone else. The students can then access this lesson any time they like and as often as they like. The other way I use this app is to have the students do the creating. Instead of the students just doing a problem on paper, they have to speak and write. I find that the students are very engaged with this process.
My Take
I love the way this app depends student understanding, engages the student with the content and lets them use creativity. Bloom's taxonomy has recently been altered by placing creativity as the highest form of knowledge. This app lets students create! I assign them a problem and off they go. They have to explain using their own words. I was very surprised by how seriously the students took the assignment to solve a simple problem. When they do it on paper they are sloppy and are not as concerned with being correct. But when they create a small video that will be posted on the web the students became very self-critical. They wanted to get it right and I found many of the trying over and over again. I like the way that I could have my students organized as a class so that all of their videos go into one place for me to access. The problem is that I was the only one that can see the videos. I think they are working on this. Sometimes the longer videos take a while to upload so keep it simple. The amount of space for the free version is limited so you can only upload so many student videos. The pro version is $99/year. For me I am not sure it is worth it since I do not use the app every day. I use it a few times a semester. Still I think it is a very good tool.
