How I Use It
After adapting and using the ideas from George Hillocks' book Teaching Argument Writing Grades 6-12 on listing and warranting evidence, I let students practice their evidence identification skills by solving some of the crimes presented on the app. They make a list of the evidence they find and write warrants connecting the evidence to the question presented. They then draw conclusions from the evidence & warrants. This app is an extension to Hillocks' work and offers students practice in a different format. This practice then transitions to finding evidence to support a claim/thesis when writing argument or analysis papers.
The use of this app motivates students to continue to hone their skills in locating relevant evidence. Students like the format and the bonus is the app is inexpensive so students with an apple product can download it and continue practicing on their own time. It reinforces students skills to make careful observations, evaluate data, and identify relevant evidence.
