How I Use It
I have used the app for at least the past two years. I use the app in station labs where small groups of 2-3 students work together to explore the app and answer teacher created questions. They draw a Venn diagram of Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes similar to the Venn diagram in the app and they answer questions found throughout the app. The app would also be great as a spiraling tool throughout other units such as DNA, mitosis and the Six Kingdoms. I have not used it this way yet, but hope to develop a lesson for it when we get to the Six Kingdoms unit.I also use the app as remediation for students that have struggled on the cell test. Students are required to attend a mandatory tutorial for remediation and they are required to work through this app during that tutorial. I use the app for both on-level and pre-AP Biology classes. The cell and cell structure app presents information at an appropriate level for all students. Advanced students can work at a higher level if they choose and on-level students can work at a level that is appropriate for them. My students use this app as an introduction to cells and cell organelles.
My Take
I have used this app with my classes for the past 2 years and I love it. The app addresses all learning styles through a variety of means. Visual learners can see the details of cell organelles and are able to read the information at their own pace, the kinesthetic learners have the interactive, hands-on experience that they need and the auditory learners are benefited with videos that they can watch and listen to at any time. Overall, I love this app for my students. It is visually very beautiful with lots of color pictures and images that enhance the learning experience. The app is thorough and in depth with the details about cells and cell structure but also pulls in other topics like types of cells, mitosis and DNA that connect student learning. The students are awed by the app and often spend more time at this station than intended because they are completely engaged in their own learning.
