How I Use It
I use this product to reinforce the concept of a fraction. Students are asked to "slice" blocks of ice, reinforcing ideas of wholes and halves and then moving on to other fractional parts. Students are exposed to concept of what is a fraction, equal sharing, how to divide up a shape, and fractions themselves. Students didn't associate the game with learning fractions (at least not in the beginning) but enjoyed playing. Students were excited to play the game and though, for some, the answer wasn't immediately obvious, they were determined to continue to try. For the "reward" section of the game (getting new hats and badging), each student needs to have their own version of the game. Students can share a game but you don't start over. This can make the game expensive for a class of 20 or more students since ideally everyone plays the entire game.
My Take
I think that this game does an excellent job of reinforcing the concept of fractions. Students were engaged and excited to play even when it got more difficult. They liked the graphics and getting new hats. It isn't gender-specific which is nice. Though students didn't always realize what they were doing "fractions," they were able to explain what they did and why using fractional parts (e.g. "I needed two pieces because the two pieces together equaled the bigger one"). The app does a good job of utilizing the iPad format rather than just reproducing a fractions worksheet. Still, it is expensive for a one time use per child.
