How I Use It
Our classrooms have a limited number of desktop machines available. Sometimes a teacher will want to have students complete more than one type of activity that would traditionally need a computer. If one of the activities requires a server-based application, and other students need to use an application such as Pearson Succesnet, Education City, or ABCYA.com during independent practice/centers we don't have enough desktop machines to accommodate this. This is when we use Puffin Academy. If the iPads are available, the teacher can use the Puffin Academy app as a browser so the students can access these flash based websites. This allows for additional options when planning for independent practice.
Since many academic websites still require flash, it is helpful when publishers get their websites listed with Puffin Academy. Many schools are moving to 1:1 and BYOD, depending on the device, teachers need to be able to plan for common activities that include some of the websites that we have learned to rely on which engage students. Puffin Academy makes this a possibility as the IT landscape changes in classrooms and teachers still need to be able to deliver a quality lesson in the classroom.
