How I Use It
After teaching about diseases and how they are spread I use this game to further the examples of different types of pathogens and different types of transmission. I used to have the kids create a comic but this game allows the same concept yet gives them visuals and hints along the way. This is a single player game. Each student would need a device. Students get into the game and no identifiable information is needed. They choose what type of pathogen to spread and then they get to name it. Students then have to get their disease to spread over all the earth. They watch news broadcasts to determine resistances and symptoms that their disease can take on. They work to fight a cure for their disease. I specifically like that they can visually see how diseases from one side of the world can spread to the other and how they can spread from one person to another.
My Take
I really like this game. It drives home the idea that I am trying to instill in my students; to be safe. In their lives they need to watch for symptoms and transmission points and this game illustrates that very well. All students, no matter their learning levels, were able to enjoy this game. Some Spanish speakers needed a little bit of help with words but they caught on quickly. Be aware that students quickly get involved in their games and don't want to leave class or they secretly try to play when you have moved onto another lesson on another day. I use it, after the initial introduction, for students who have completed assignments early as a reward for good work.
