How I Use It
This is a fun review or center based activity. The app is set up as a game. Fractions fall form the sky in different forms (numerical fractions, pie charts, ect.) and the student needs to tilt the iPad to have it fall on the correct placement on a number line at the bottom. It starts out slow and speeds up, as well as making the number line more difficult. I would use this as a review or practice while studying fractions to reinforce the concept of value to fractions. It is entertaining (ok, even I got hooked on playing it) and students enjoy returning to the game. It gives a great "placement" to fractions. This helps to build better number sense as opposed to just seeing fractions and saying < > or =. I did not run into any issues while playing (and like I said, I was hooked for a while). My only concern is that progress is specific to the iPad, not individual students. When starting with a new student on a shared iPad, they will begin at the start again; although, the game is fun enough that this will not be a problem. This is a great center based review and exploration game for learning the value of fractions.
My Take
I really like this app for building number sense with fractions. It is fun, entertaining, and builds a good knowledge base of fractions value. I really like that it changes how the numbers are presented (numerical fractions, pie charts, percent, ect.) and not just regular fractions. There are many variances of the game and it keeps kids focused. Aside from the $3.99 price being tough for schools to buy numerous copies, it is well worth it on my home iPad for my kids. Also, if it was purchased for school on a couple select devices it would be great for a center.
