How I Use It
The app description says it includes 1,300 past GeoBee questions. The questions can be about any location in the world, so it is hard to incorporate into an actual classroom setting. Advanced learners are engaged by the complexity of the questions; however, the average learner would be frustrated and they give up quickly. Students have downloaded this on their own to practice general geography knowledge. For students who take the yearly Geography Bee seriously, they said it helped them. The style of question is similar and they became accustomed to listening for keywords to help them better understand the questions and to get used to the timing. I scored it a 3 for engagement because of the advanced students who want to use it. For the general population it would earn a 1.
My Take
There are three different types of levels: multiple choice, map, and photo challenges. The multiple choice questions are good practice for a geography bee. However, both the map and the photo questions are frustrating. Even when I knew the correct answer, trying to zoom in so I could click there often failed. The map screen is so sensitive, so a zoom is often mistaken as the answer submission. I would not request my entire class to download the app. It is a paid app for both Android and iOS. The sound would also drive me crazy. There was no option location to mute the sound either. The app is named appropriately, it is a GeoBee Challenge. For people who like knowing the right answer all the time, this app is not for you.
