How I Use It
I use this app when I have extra free time in the teaching day and want to give students constructive free time. They always ask to use this app and look forward to spending time with the alphabet monsters, even though it is clearly a learning game! This app is definitely a supplemental learning tool. I never replace actual teaching time with this app, as it does not specifically instruct students on letter sounds. It would be nice if the app had a place for students to simply practice single letter sounds instead of always in the context of a big vocabulary word, which can at times be hard for my students with low literacy skills. I've also tried the app in groups, and it seems to be effective. Students like to pass around an iPad and take turns dragging letters into the correct spots and then practice the newest word they have added to their vocabulary.
My Take
This product makes a great teaching tool because of its accessibility and way of drawing students into practicing letter sounds and building vocabulary. The students are eager to use the product because it is fun and uses interesting voices and adorable monsters to reiterate letter sounds. It can be used for additional practice of letter sounds, but shouldn't serve as an initial exposure to letter sounds. This app serves as supplemental learning tool, and I let students use it after they have learned their initial letter sounds. The app doesn't directly teach letter sounds, but it provides a way for students to practice letter sounds and match the sound with the letter image. It's also a fun way for students to learn new words and expand their vocabulary. My students' favorite word from the app tends to be gargantuan --what a fun word to hear from the mouths of kindergarteners!
