How I Use It
In my ELL classroom, I have used ChatterPix Kids to get my students speaking. For example, as a practice and application lesson, students used ChatterPix Kids to demonstrate their understanding of idioms. Students were asked to choose four idioms to illustrate through a video. Each student used the app to take photos, or to use photos that were in their existing camera roll (which could be downloaded from a search) and demonstrate the true meaning of an idiom. One example is the idiom, "a piece of cake". Students downloaded a photograph of a piece of cake into their camera roll. They used it in ChatterPix Kids, adding a mouth and saying, "A piece of cake really means that something is easy to accomplish". They were then able to decorate the piece of cake. Students then exported their ChatterPix creattion to their camera roll, and eventually created an imovie using those exported clips. Students quickly learned how to use the app, and enjoyed it. I have also used ChatterPix Kids to create a video of a book reading. Students narrated the book, and we combined all of the clips together to create an iMovie of the book.
My Take
Overall, I believe ChatterPix Kids is a useful tool to allow students the chance to create a finished product that can demonstrate their understanding of specific skills. It is easily adaptable to many different content areas and concepts. I especially appreciated the fact that students are able to rerecord as many times as they need. This gives my ELL students the chance to be comfortable sharing their final product. ChatterPix Kis is also a great app to help students learn about app smashing. The only criticism I have is that the thirty seconds given to record is not long enough.
