How I Use It
I have used Book Creator mainly with whole group lessons, although I do teach a split 4th and 5th grade class, so maybe you could call teaching each grade separately a "small group." I have used it to teach writing lessons specifically about paragraph indentation, sentence structure, figurative language (various types), creative writing, narrative writing, biography, and a whole lot more! I have also used it with social study lessons that are cross-curricular in all of the above areas. Students have created individual books, partner books, and whole-class books with and without images/graphics. We also made an art book with imported student art work! Everything we did worked wonderfully! The kids were engaged, excited to share their work, etc. They loved being able to use their own art work and/or find images, and had a ton of fun with the recording button!
My Take
This product is EXCEPTIONAL! The openendedness stands out, as students are able to create from a blank template of their choice. There are just enough choices of text, buttons, color, shapes, images, etc. without overwhelming them. These are all presented in a clean, uncluttered manner on the screen, which is beneficial for students who get distracted by too-busy desktops. Teachers can use Book Creator to make instructional books about any subject, or they can make templates for students to follow. Students can start with said templates, or can begin with a Book Creator blank template and use the tools to make their own creations. These features are all motivating and engaging for students, yet they build content and achieve the core academic standards.
