How I Use It
I have used Book Creator in my classroom as an independent work station. Children are given both specific and open ended assignments to complete independently. I have used it as a reading response journal where first grade students record pages for a specific purpose (list characters and write 2 sentences about each, what is the main idea of the story, what was the author trying to get you to think about...) . I have used it to help students follow a structure of different kinds of writing (narrative, opinion, nonfiction). I have suggested personal collection books (nouns, verbs, adjectives, interesting words...). My students have also used the collaboration option to work successfully together on stories.
My Take
I see Book Creator as a multifunctional teaching and learning tool. As a teacher, I have created sample books for students pon which to base their own writing. It has given me the ability to type on a page, even as my student was working, to give feedback and insert a teaching point. It has given students the opportunity to collaborate freely both in partnerships and as a small group to record their thinking even during our remote learning where some of them had never even met face to face! They have been able to personalize their learning through image/drawing choices, font sizing, text color, and video vs. audio vs text. It has vastly improved the flow of language from my students who were reluctant writers. Editing is far less painful when corrections can be made easily and without leaving a mark. Book Creator has given the children a wider audience with whom to share their thoughts. Students are spending more time and thinking more deeply about their writing. It has made them better writers.
